Imperium Jaskini Behemota

SUMMARY
of an unofficial poll and a discussion
that took place in the Behemoth's Lair community
(http://heroes.net.pl)
on the topic
"What siege system in Heroes V".

Prepared by
Ururam Tururam (ut@heroes.net.pl)

An unofficial discussion and poll took place on the Behemoth's Lair
wortal. The topic was: "How castle siege should be implemented in
Heroes V". It was not organized by the BL staff, but there are a few
interesting and noteworthy theses mentioned in.
Only the members of the Community were allowed to vote in the poll.
Both members and guests were allowed to express their opinions in the
discussion. The results follow.

There were 37 votes in the poll:
12 (32%) votes for a system similar to Heroes 3 one
1 (3%) vote for a system similar to Heroes 4 one
17 (46%) votes for a system that combines advantages of H3 and H4 ones
7 (19%) votes for an entirely new system.

There were 25 posts in the discussions. Here are the most interesting
proposals:

- I'd like to take the shooting towers from H3, and the possibility of
shooting and fiting for the on-wall units from H4. Arrow towers and
walls should be developed and built separately. Upgrading the moat is
also noteworthy. For example 3 levels of walls, up to 3 arrow towers and
two kinds of moat.

- There sholud be a possibility for the defender to place the units
inside the walls the way he wishes after he sees the number and placement
of the attackers. The units hidden behind the walls should be safe from
all the distance attacks like in H4.

- After a battle the owner should spent some money/resoyrces for
reconstrution of the damaged parts of city walls.

- There should be a possibility of filling parts the moats by attackers.

- A few more siege machines than in H3. Battering rams, siege towers etc.

- Firemasters in the arrow towers of the castle may also gain experience.

- Some solutions used in the Total War game are worth of considering.

- Well, i think that the sieges shopuld be more real-life-like. I want
Heroes V to go in that direction abandoning old ideas.

- Flying units should be more powerful during sieges than they were in H4
but much less powerful than they wer in H3 (no penalties from walls).

- Consider a second (lower) wall before moat.

- How about implementing burning tar as an upgrade of castle defense?

- City walls should block most of the spells, but a high level teleport
spell should be able to put an attacking unit inside the walls.

- Key points of the defense that could be occupied by units (like in H4)
should stay.

- Different castles should have much different defense options and/or
upgrades.

- I think that there should be a lot of castle defense levels. Not 3 but
for example 10. Walls can be of stone or of wood, the moat should be
independent of them etc.

- Another proposal of a defense structure: anti-magic barrier improving
the magic resistance of defending units.
