Imperium Jaskini Behemota

SUMMARY
of a poll and a discussion
that took place in the Behemoth's Lair community
(http://heroes.net.pl)
on the topic
"should a hero participate in combat
in Heroes of Might and Magic V".

Prepared by
Ururam Tururam (ut@heroes.net.pl)

The community of the Behemoth's lair organized a poll and a discussion on
the question "Should a hero participate in combat in the upcoming game
Heroes of Might and Magic V". The results follow.

There were 77 vote submissions in the poll. Among them:
There were 62 votes "Heroes should actively participate in combat as in
Heroes4".
There were 15 votes "heroes should only command as in Heroes3".

This means that about 80% of the community members want heroes to stay
fighting.

The poll was accompanied with a discussion. There were 44 posts submitted in
this discussion. Here are the essentials:

Quotes and summing-ups of posts for fighting heroes:
- "Fighting heroes especially with immortality potions make us feel their
heroic power."
- "A fighting hero should have bigger influence on the units (s)he
commands."
- "Fighting heroes - it was the best new idea in Heroes4."
- "Heroes should fight but the combat must be much more balanced that it is
done in Heroes4."
- "Fighting - yes, but only one hero in an army."
- "Dead heroes should not be resurrected for free. They should lose some
experience or whatever."
- "A hero is a hero not a coward. He should fight!"
- "A hero should fight but only if the combat system is improved. A novice
hero is now too weak, an experienced one is too strong. So fighting heroes -
yes, Heroes4 combat - no."
- "Heroes should fight but they must be weaker."
- "Better AI should resolve the overpowered heroes problem."
- "Maybe leave this decision to a player before each fight?"
- "A hero should fight but (s)he should be mounted!"
- "A hero is e general. (S)he should start as a non fighting one, but (s)he
should have a possibility of joining the battle in any moment. If this is
done the troops should lose all the bonuses given by the hero because there
is no general now."
- "A hero standing when the creatures are fighting - this looks silly."
- "A might hero should fight. A magic hero should only aid the army. Only
one might hero and only one magic one should be allowed in each army".
- "Yes! They should fight. A pack of seven heroes is nice!"

Quotes and summing-ups of posts for non-fighting heroes:
- "Too powerful hero spoils the game when (s)he can defeat an army alone."
- "A fighting hero is attractive but only medium-level heroes are balanced."
- "In later scenarios of any campaign there is usually no need for the army,
the main hero is too powerful. (The Thermonuclear Man syndrome.)"
- "It is too easy to lose an inexperienced hero."
- "A hero is a general. And the general should not fight."
- "The power of heroes is unrealistic. They are heroes, not gods."
- "Heroes should not fight. But there should be a possibility of having an
army without a hero and a hero without an army."
