Imperium Jaskini Behemota

SUMMARY
of a poll and a discussion
that took place in the Behemoth's Lair community
(http://heroes.net.pl)
on the topic
"Real time elements in Heroes V".

Prepared by
Ururam Tururam (ut@heroes.net.pl)

The community of the Behemoth's lair organized a poll and a discussion on
the question "How many real time elements are acceptable in Heroes V?".
Only the members of the Community were allowed to vote in the poll.
Both members and guests were allowed to express their opinions in the
discussion. The results follow.

There were 34 votes in the poll:

22 (65%) votes for absolutely nothing that resembles RTS.
10 (29%) votes for nothing but a time limit option in multiplayer games.
2 (6%) votes for introducing simultaneous turns.
0 (0%) votes for introducing real time options on the battlefield.
0 (0%) votes for introducing real time options on the adventure map.
0 (0%) votes for introducing real time options on both of them.

The result is surprising - and it is not. It is not because it is easy to predict
that speaking about RTS in the case of Heroes will be treated as a heresy.
But it is because even suggesting of introduction of an option of real time
was treated as one. It is noteworthy however that two persons backed the
idea of giving orders to the troops by all the players and once and then
“compiling” the turns making all the units move simultaneously.

There were 41 posts in the discussion. Here are typical quotes:

-----
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING:

- This is a game of clever mind, not of quick fingers.

- No, no, no! Only turns. No exceptions!

- I really hope Ubisoft does not plan to introduce real time to H5!

- Turns are the base. Don’t touch it.

- How one even dares to ask such a question?

- Turns, turns, one thousand times - turns!

- RTS in Heroes would look like a fish with an umbrella.

- Let’s blow up everyone who wants to make an RTS out of our
beloved game!

- I would like to see an RTS in the M&M world but it has to be just
a different game. Heroes must stay turn-based.

- [----] [censored]

- What comes this question from? It is not April 1-st today!

- There are borders that should not be crossed. Heroes for turns, Warcraft
for real time. I do want something new in H5 but it is not RTS.

- RTS for heroes? Maybe a FPP shooter, huh?

- Every step towards real time solutions maybe a step to far towards
a chasm.

- I am afraid what could happen with Heroes if such topics are under
discussion. Snow White as one of the heroes?

- I will defend turns as Reytan! [A person from Polish history, maybe
general Cambronne at Waterloo is quite a good parallel for him.]

-----
ONLY A TIME LIMIT:

- HoMM as a turn-based game is an antidote for the flood of RTSes.
I have nothing against time limits but ONLY in multiplayer games.

- Heroes are what they are because of the lack of teal time. I can have
a dinner or a bath thinking what to do next. And I don’t play MP games,
so there can be anything in.

- Time limits are OK in the hotseat mode. But introducing anything but
them is killing the spirit of the game.

- Turns only. No simultaneous moves. A time limit for multiplayer games
is good, without it the passive player could die alive.

- RTS options would close the hotseat mode I like the best. The limit is
useful when playing through the net.

- The second option, but the limit has to be switchable: on/off.

-----
SIMULTANEOUS TURNS:

- It could be really interesting! Now silly situations occur when sometimes
I can chase an enemy hero from a distance because it is my turn, and the
other time I cannot do it - for it is not my turn. I think the idea of
simultaneous turns is good looking and trying it may be a good solution.

- Leaving turns untouched is a must. But introducing some kind of reaction
for passive players (escaping from the assault if the army has enough
movement points for example) can be well considered.

There was no single post backing other options.
